Copyright Issues - Using Free Images On Your Blog

Most free images found on the Internet are likely to have some form of license restriction. To avoid issues relating to copyright infringement you should always check the license or user agreement to ensure you aren't violating any laws. At first you will find this process quite time consuming but as you learn more about license types you will be able to make your choices quicker.

Most, but not all free images require some kind of credit to the image-maker. There are a number of images to be found on stock photo site Stock.xchng, for example, that don't require you to mention the creator. The sites standard license agreement does request that you "take the time to comment on and rate the image you download and do your best to show the work you created with the image to the photographer". It's a small price to pay for a quality, free image if all you have to do is let someone know you how you have used their photo.

Here are a few places you can look to find free stock images online:

Stock.xchng

I have already mentioned this site earlier. There are many free images to be found here with very loose licensing that don't require any form of crediting. Be aware though, the higher quality images that are displayed alongside the free images require some kind of payment. Always double check what you are downloading and investigate the license type prior to use on your blog or website.

123rf

This is a site that is well worth creating a membership with. They have thousands of free images and an endless list of categories to choose from. 123rf is particularly good if you are looking for free smaller images (ideal for websites) of less than 400px. It's a little difficult locating the free images but if you can find the "stock photography' header on the home page you will discover the links you need from there.

Freedigitalphotos

Like most of the stock photography sites, freedigitaldownloads offer both free and premium stock photos and illustrations for a variety of purposes. There is a massive choice of high quality images available in a range of categories, all produced by the community members of the site.

I highly recommend this site for ease of use and range of choice. Simply perform a keyword search for what you need and make your selection from the free or premium pay options available for each image.

There are a number of other options available online including everystockphoto and Google's "Creative Commons" Image search. A little research will locate a number of choices; the above are just three of the best sites to try. The other obvious option is to have a go at creating your own images to use. The absolute beauty of this idea is certainty, your own photos are definitely "license free".

Have you come across any other great sites for free stock images? Let us know what you have found online in the comments section below.
